With our first hard freezes typically arriving in late October and snowfall possible any time after, the window to prepare your lawn is shorter than most homeowners think.

A fall clean up at the end of the season is the difference between a lush, green lawn next May and a patchy, struggling one. Here's exactly what to do, in the right order.

Removing the Leaves — Don't Let Them Sit

This is the most visible part of fall cleanup, and it's also the most time-sensitive. In Salt Lake City, oak trees, maple, and cottonwood trees drop heavily through October and into November. Leaving them on your lawn for more than a week or two can cause real damage.

A thick layer of wet leaves blocks sunlight and traps moisture against the grass blades, creating the perfect conditions for mold, snow mold, and fungal disease — all common problems in Wasatch Front yards after a snowy winter.

Fertilize: Apply a slow-release fall fertilizer to strengthen roots before the ground freezes — aim for late September to mid-October.

Final mowing:Continue mowing until growth stops. Drop your final cut to about 2–2.5 inches to prevent matting under snow, but don't scalp it

Weed control:Apply a pre-emergent or spot-treat broadleaf weeds in fall while they're still actively growing and absorbing

Shut Down and Winterize Your Irrigation System

Schedule a professional sprinkler blow-out before the first hard freeze (usually late October in SLC)

Prep Your Garden Beds and Perennials
