Morning Glory Mayhem
How to Tame This Invasive Weed in Utah
Morning glory, also known as field bindweed, may look pretty when the flowers open but don't be fooled by this sneaky weed climbing up your rose bushes—it’s an aggressive invader that can quickly choke out your garden and plants.
With deep roots and relentless vines, this pesky weed is tough to eliminate, but not impossible! Here’s our recommendations for taming the morning glory in your landscape:
1️⃣ Remove It Early & Often
🔹 Pull it out when you first notice is, when it's still a small weed—before it develops deep roots.
🔹 Dig at least 12 inches deep to remove as much root as possible.
2️⃣ Smother It
🔹 Cover the area with heavy duty, contractor grade landscape fabric, and 6" staples, securing the fabric every 2 feet. (Link at the bottom of page to the staples and fabric that we use at Sassy Grass Landscape)
Blocking sunlight is helpful in taming morning glory, so make sure to use a fabric that is designed to keep sun rays out.
🔹 This weakens the plant over time and prevents regrowth.
3️⃣ Chemical Control (If Necessary)
🔹 Use an herbicide with glyphosate or 2,4-D on actively growing leaves.
🔹 Be cautious—spot treat carefully to avoid harming other plants.
4️⃣ Improve Soil & Plant Smart
🔹 Healthy soil supports strong plants that outcompete weeds.
🔹 Dense ground covers or deep-rooted perennials can help suppress morning glory.
💡 Pro Tip: Persistence is key! Regular maintenance is the best way to keep morning glory from taking over your Utah landscape. 🌿
